Though price it out with options, a more loaded non hybrid version may come closer to the price of the hybrid and make it more of a logical choice. I just can't see the hybrid one making any kind of sense. If you like the XV, it's a solid car, I'd recommend the non hybrid version though. And that's assuming all city driving, as the mileage will be less of a factor if you do more highway driving. That means the hybrid version will pay for itself in a short 22 years. At $3 a gallon that's $180 a year saved for the hybrid version. If you do the math there, at 12,000 miles a year the difference between 26mpg and 30mpg is around 60 gallons a year of gas. Even if you are driving mostly city cycles, $4,000 for a 4mpg improvement is a lot. The city mileage is a bit better than the regular one of course (30mpg vs 26mpg), however that's irrelevant if you are mostly commuting by highway. It gets the same highway mileage as the non hybrid, at a $4,000 price premium. I've not been terribly impressed with the hybrid XV. What are your criteria? Do you need AWD? Performance vs fuel economy? How much room, price range, etc? Just don't waste your time with the hybrid Crosstrek. I'd also look at theSubaru Forester, and possibly the Outback too. Mazdas are generally pretty fun to drive too (I think the base CX5 even has a 6-speed manual). Mazda CX5 also gets good mileage, despite not being a hybrid. There are a lot of them in use as NYC cabs, so they must get fairly good city mileage. The Escape is technically a small SUV, but take a look at that too. For what they're designed to do, they do pretty well, there's a reason they're so damn common. This may be the least r/cars sentence once could possibly utter, but I'd have a look at the Toyota Highlander hybrid. It's also a compact crossover (Impreza hatchback on stilts), not a mid-size SUV. Still slow, just like the regular Crosstrek. Highway gas mileage is the same as the standard model, city gas mileage is only about 4mpg better than a standard model with a CVT, and frankly quite disappointing for a 4-cylinder hybrid.
